The Imo House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Governor Hope Uzodimma to direct the Ministry of Agriculture to source and procure high-yield seedlings for distribution to farmers in the state.
This move aims to improve crop yields, reduce the cost of living, and enhance food security.
According to Mr. Kennedy Ibeh, the representative of Obowo state constituency, “inflation and economic recession worsened by food insecurity, making life difficult for citizens.”
He emphasized the need for immediate action, as the beginning of the planting season is the ideal time to make high-yield crops available to farmers.
Ibeh also highlighted the potential benefits of providing high-yield seedlings, including boosting the agricultural sector, improving nutrition, generating employment, increasing GDP, and enhancing food security.
Other lawmakers, including Mr. Chisom Ojukwu (Nkwere constituency) and Mr. Ugochukwu Amuchie (Aboh Mbaise constituency), supported the motion, stressing the importance of paying attention to agriculture for food security and ensuring that food prices do not continue to soar.
The Speaker, Mr. Chike Olemgbe, ruled in favor of the motion, directing the Clerk to convey the resolution to the office of the governor.
This development comes as Governor Uzodimma recently signed the 2025 budget into law, allocating N50.02 billion to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
