In an effort to enhance food production and keep farmers informed about the latest advancements in agricultural practices, the Nigerian Association of Animal Health and Husbandry Technologists (NAAHHT), Oyo State chapter, recently held its inaugural Oyo Farmers’ Interactive Forum 2024.
The one-day event, which took place at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT), aimed to provide farmers with the necessary knowledge to maximize their investments and overcome challenges in their daily operations.
Speaking at the event, Oyo State NAAHHT Chairman, Mr. Olayinka Oluwatoyin, explained the difficulties faced by farmers due to the current economic situation.
He emphasised the importance of equipping farmers with the right knowledge to succeed.
“Given the tough economic climate and the challenges farmers face, we felt it was essential to organize this forum to help farmers gain the insights needed to thrive in their businesses,” he said.
Mr. Oluwatoyin also mentioned that the forum served as a “palliative measure” for farmers, offering them free access to valuable information and guidance from experienced farmers who had overcome setbacks in their careers.
He added that the forum introduced the latest agricultural practices that could enhance productivity.
The NAAHHT chairman also revealed ongoing discussions with the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT) to encourage farmers to enroll in short-term courses that would further enhance their skills and broaden their knowledge.
During the event, FCAH&PT Provost, Dr. Koya Owosibo, stressed the need to address the rising costs of essential crops like maize and soybean used in animal production.
He highlighted the importance of producing high-quality, drug-free animal protein to prevent antibiotic resistance in humans.
“This gathering is crucial as we explore ways to ensure the production of safe and quality animal protein,”he remarked.
Tunmise Olagbaju, Managing Director of Real People Concept and a stakeholder in livestock production, praised the initiative, noting its timeliness.
“With the current economic crisis, climate change, and food security concerns, this forum offers a vital platform for farmers and professionals to exchange ideas on mitigating these challenges and boosting food security in Nigeria,” he said.
The event was well-attended, and organizers expressed their commitment to making the forum an ongoing platform for farmer interaction and education.
