The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN and Tomorrow.io to develop a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) System, aimed at providing location-specific, actionable weather advisories to Nigerian farmers via mobile SMS.

The partnership, formalized on Friday at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, aligns with the United Nations’ goal of ensuring early warning systems for all and strengthens Nigeria’s climate resilience, particularly in the agricultural sector.

NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized that the initiative is designed to enhance agricultural productivity and food security by equipping farmers with real-time weather intelligence.

“This aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda. By leveraging the expertise of MTN and Tomorrow.io, we are opening up climate science to the private sector, ensuring its immense impact is felt across Nigeria’s economy,” Anosike stated.

MTN’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting government-led initiatives, stressing the transformational role of weather data in agriculture, disaster management, and economic growth.

“We are optimistic about the impact this collaboration will have, not just on farmers but on emergency response and the broader Nigerian economy,” Toriola noted.

Tomorrow.io’s Managing Director, Dr. Henry Onyemachi, hailed the agreement as a milestone in Nigeria’s drive for food security, highlighting the critical role of climate intelligence in agricultural decision-making.

Under the agreement, NiMet, MTN, and Tomorrow.io will jointly develop, deploy, and test the DCAS platform, ensuring farmers receive timely weather updates via SMS, empowering them to make informed decisions that boost productivity and resilience.
