NOA Educates Farmers, Traders on Harmful Food Preservatives

by AgroNigeria

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Oyo State has launched a campaign to educate farmers and traders about the dangers of using hazardous chemicals to preserve food items.

This practice has led to terminal illnesses and untimely deaths among consumers.

Malam Issa Onilu, Director General of the Agency, emphasized the need for farmers and traders to adopt traditional preservation methods.

He stated, “We are sensitising the traders on the dangers inherent in the preservation of foods with dangerous chemicals such as hypo bleach for cassava, calcium carbide for plantains, and Snipper for beans and other grains.”

Onilu also noted that the use of these chemicals has resulted in severe health issues, including cancer, renal failure, memory loss, infertility, and even death.

He urged traders to desist from these practices, warning that the government will enforce the law and punish those found guilty.

Representing the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs. Damola Salami recommended safer alternatives, such as consuming fresh, unpreserved foods and using bio-fertilisers.

She also stressed the importance of adhering to withholding and re-entry periods in food preservation.

The campaign, which will reach all 33 local government areas in Oyo State, aims to promote safer food handling practices and protect consumers from the harmful effects of chemical preservatives.
