Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, have pledged to strengthen agricultural ties through technology, research, and public-private partnerships.
The collaboration, which involves the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), aims to introduce innovative farming techniques and sustainable agricultural practices to enhance food security and economic development in both Oyo State and Sierra Leone.
Makinde announced the partnership during President Bio’s three-day visit to Ibadan, which began on March 3, 2025.
Speaking on the theme “The Power of Improved Technologies and Public-Private Partnership to Accelerate the Feed Salone Strategy,” Makinde emphasized the need to empower farmers with advanced agricultural solutions.
President Bio, in his address, highlighted Sierra Leone’s untapped agricultural potential and ongoing efforts to develop agribusiness.
He stressed the importance of leveraging scientific advancements to improve farming practices and ensure long-term sustainability.
“Our farmers deserve access to the best resources and knowledge available,” Bio stated. “We are focused on sustainable practices that will benefit future generations. By embracing modern agricultural technologies, we can increase yields, reduce waste, and ensure our farmers remain competitive in the global market.”
He further underscored the role of public-private partnerships in driving the Feed Salone Strategy, which aims to boost food production and resilience against climate change and market fluctuations.
Welcoming Bio and his delegation, Makinde described the partnership as a strategic step toward economic growth, not just a diplomatic gesture.
He emphasized the need for training programs to equip farmers with the necessary skills to maximize productivity.
Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Marcus Ogunbiyi, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to ensuring food security across the country.
During his visit, President Bio will tour key agricultural research centers, including Fashola Farms in Oyo, and engage with farmers and stakeholders to explore avenues for collaboration and investment in agriculture.
