Plateau State University has been bolstered in its agricultural program through a generous tractor donation from the State Government.

This contribution is part of the state’s continued commitment to enhancing agricultural education and production, in line with the governor’s comprehensive agricultural transformation agenda.

On Tuesday, Shedrack Best, a professor and the acting Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University, received the tractor at the university’s campus in Bokkos Local Government Area.

He expressed sincere appreciation to Governor Caleb Mutfwang for the generous donation, recognizing its potential to significantly improve the university’s agricultural programs.

Best highlighted the crucial role of strengthening agricultural institutions like Plateau State University in fostering a sustainable future for farming in the region.

He pointed out that the university’s Faculty of Agriculture is rapidly expanding and becoming more ambitious, with the donation poised to support its ongoing efforts in agricultural education and research.

“We are thrilled to receive this tractor. It provides our students with the chance to gain hands-on experience in operating it, which will inspire them to consider careers in agriculture,” the Acting Vice Chancellor remarked.

He also emphasized the university’s agricultural assets, such as a dam and the Agricultural Services and Training Corporation (ASTC), along with its prime location at the center of the region’s agricultural activities.

Governor Mutfwang, represented by Samson Bugama, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, highlighted the state’s dedication to modernizing agriculture during the tractor presentation.

He pointed out that currently, only 0.05% of agriculture in Plateau State is mechanized, stressing the urgent need for transformation.

The governor explained that the tractor donation is part of the Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape Project, which aims to enhance agricultural practices and boost production across Plateau State.

He further emphasized that his administration is committed to moving beyond traditional farming tools, like hoes and cutlasses, and incorporating technological solutions to meet the state’s food requirements.

Additionally, he outlined plans to acquire more tractors and power tillers, as well as create state-run plantations to encourage youth involvement in agriculture.

“Our objective is to engage young people in farming and lessen the reliance on manual labor,” Governor Mutfwang stated.

He also shared that the state intends to cultivate 15,000 hectares of land this year, up from 6,000 hectares last year, focusing on vulnerable communities and schools.

He clarified that the donation is part of a broader initiative backed by the World Bank, with Plateau State University being one of five institutions selected to receive tractors.
