The Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Professor Garba Sharubutu, has warned that Nigeria’s protein intake remains critically below the globally recommended standard.
Speaking at the 61st Founder’s Day and Pre-Convocation Lecture of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan, Sharubutu, represented by the Executive Director of the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Professor Muhammed Lawal Attanda, revealed that while the global standard recommends a daily protein intake of 64 grams, Nigeria lags significantly behind at just 35 grams.
He urged agricultural institutions, researchers, and stakeholders to intensify efforts in boosting animal production to bridge this nutritional gap.
“As we speak, Nigeria’s protein intake is far below the global recommendation. There are enough opportunities for graduates in this sector to go into protein production rather than seeking white-collar jobs. Whether through poultry or small ruminant farming, they have the technology to make a difference,” he stated.
Sharubutu also called on institutions to leverage available technologies to improve animal production, emphasizing the importance of patronizing local products to strengthen the economy and combat hunger.
Guest speaker, Professor Samuel Soladoye Abiola, highlighted key challenges facing the sector, including cattle rustling, farmer-herder conflicts, and limited financial access.
He urged the government to implement supportive policies and provide essential assistance to livestock farmers to enhance production and food security.
