Quelea Bird Invasion: FMAFS Begins Aerial Spray in Taraba

by AgroNigeria

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has launched an aerial spraying campaign to control the quelea bird infestation affecting farms in Taraba, aiming to enhance food security in the region.

Adamu Kazaure, the ministry’s field officer for Adamawa and Taraba, disclosed the initiative in an interview on Friday in Jalingo.

He explained that the campaign is a response to farmers’ complaints about significant crop damage caused by quelea birds in the Karim-Lamido and Ardo-Kola local government areas.

Quelea birds are small seed eaters that feed on various grasses, crops, and fruits, posing a serious threat to agricultural productivity.

The 10-day exercise, conducted with a contracted Agro-Aviation Aircraft, will cover the entire state to prevent future infestations.

Kazaure noted that the campaign follows reports and video evidence from affected farmers documenting the severe impact of the quelea birds on rice farms in Nahuta-Lalinga village (Karim Lamido LGA) and Mayo-Renewo (Ardo-Kola LGA).

However, these farmers had appealed to the government for assistance due to the significant crop losses they were experiencing.

To address the infestation, the ministry’s team is using Fenthion and DDVP pesticides.
