Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has commended President Bola Tinubu for achieving a historic milestone in the first Ramadan season under his administration, where food prices have actually decreased.
This development, dubbed the “Tinubu Effect,” marks a significant departure from the usual trend of rising food prices during Ramadan, which has been consistent over the past decade.
Omokri noted that despite the simultaneous occurrence of Ramadan and the Christian fasting season of Lent, which typically increases demand and prices, the opposite has happened in 2025.
He attributed this positive change to the government’s efforts to monitor and regulate the supply chain, saying:
“Every truck carrying farm produce is monitored up to the market so it cannot be diverted to neighbouring countries. Livestock is monitored when it enters Nigeria. Dams are being surveilled, and water distribution to irrigate farms is now treated as a National Security issue.”
Omokri also highlighted the impact of the government’s crackdown on fuel smuggling, which has led to a significant reduction in fuel prices.
“That punitive measure put the fear of the law into the sector, and now fuel smuggling is at an all-time low in Nigeria,” he said.
Omokri emphasized, “Look at the first headline from 2022, bearing witness to food price increase because of Ramadan. But in 2025, the headline is the reverse. The Tinubu Effect is real!”
