REA to Integrate Clean Energy Solutions Into Agriculture

by AgroNigeria

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has formalised two key partnerships intended to link renewable energy expansion with broader national development goals, including food security, industrial growth, and youth empowerment.

The agreements, signed recently in Nigeria, are designed to integrate clean energy solutions into agriculture and innovation-driven development, with implementation to follow through joint planning, resource mobilisation, and stakeholder coordination.

The first agreement was signed between REA and the Nigerian Commodity Exchange (NCX) under a framework titled the “National Collaborative Framework for Agro-Industrial Cluster Development, Renewable Energy Deployment, and Commodity Trade Formalisation Across Nigeria.”

The collaboration aligns with the Federal Government’s Food Security Agenda and focuses on integrating solar-powered energy systems into agricultural value chains.

Through this partnership, both institutions plan to support agro-industrial clusters by connecting reliable renewable energy to key agricultural processes such as commodity aggregation, storage, processing, trading, and export.

The initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve value retention of agricultural products, strengthen food security, and boost Nigeria’s non-oil export earnings.

It also reflects the growing recognition of the link between energy access and agricultural productivity in driving economic development.

The second MoU was signed between REA and the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN) to jointly implement and co-host the Technology Ecosystem Dialogue (TED).

YIN is a national innovation platform focused on addressing Nigeria’s digital skills gap through training, mentorship, STEM education, and entrepreneurship support for youths, women, startups, and persons with disabilities.

The organisation has reportedly trained over 30,000 participants through its programmes.

Under this agreement, both organisations will collaborate annually on the Technology Ecosystem Dialogue, which will focus on clean energy, digital transformation, smart mobility, and innovation.

REA will contribute technical expertise, institutional support, and participation in policy discussions, exhibitions, hackathons, and implementation of outcomes from the dialogue.

REA stated that the partnerships reflect its broader strategy of building integrated development systems that connect renewable energy deployment with agriculture, innovation, youth development, and sustainable infrastructure.

The agency added that such collaborations are essential for driving inclusive economic growth and long-term national resilience.

However, no specific timelines or funding details were disclosed in the agreements. Implementation is expected to depend on further project design, financing arrangements, and coordination among relevant stakeholders and government institutions.
