Suspected Terrorists Warn Kebbi Farmers Not to Adopt Mechanised Farming

by AgroNigeria

Farmers in Kebbi State have come under fresh threats from suspected terrorists, believed to be members of the Lakurawa group, who are warning them not to adopt mechanised farming techniques.

The warning has caused widespread fear in Augie Local Government Area, where many farmers have begun using machinery to avoid losses associated with cattle rustling.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that the group issued an ultimatum to residents, stating that any farmer found using machines in place of cattle for farming would face execution. Local farmers say the threat has created deep anxiety, particularly among those who recently embraced modern equipment as a way to maintain their productivity and secure their livelihoods.

A resident who spoke about the development said the group now dictates farming practices in the area. “They forbid us from using machines. When we use cattle, they seize them. We’re farming both to feed ourselves and to make a living,” the source explained.

The situation has left many farmers in a difficult position. Relying on cattle exposes them to the risk of rustling, while using machines could attract violent attacks. This has intensified the hardship in several villages, where residents must now weigh personal safety against economic survival.

Security personnel have confirmed the existence of threat letters that were circulated across communities in Augie LGA. An intelligence officer stated that the threats are being taken seriously and that several affected areas are already on high alert.

Augie has experienced repeated attacks linked to the same group. In one of the most recent incidents, at least 13 local vigilantes were killed in April 2025 in Morai village. They had been ambushed while attempting to recover livestock stolen during a raid.
