The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has called on nations, including Nigeria, to adopt decisive and ambitious measures to tackle climate change.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Oluseyi Soremekun, the National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre.

During her two-day official visit to Nigeria, Mohammed emphasized the urgency of strengthening Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to ensure a sustainable and secure future for the planet.

While in Nigeria, she engaged in high-level discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and other senior government officials.

“Nations, including Nigeria, with the support of the UN and other partners, must scale up their NDCs to create a more sustainable and equitable future for the planet and its inhabitants,” she stated.

Mohammed also met with Dr. Omar Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States, and Mohamed Malick Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria.

Joined by Leonardo Simão, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, her discussions addressed critical regional issues, including climate change, food security, and solutions for internal displacement.

She highlighted the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement to boost economic cooperation and foster regional integration.

The Deputy Secretary-General reaffirmed the UN’s dedication to supporting Nigeria through the UN-Nigeria Cooperation Framework (2023–2027).

She assured that the UN would collaborate with the Nigerian government to address developmental challenges and promote sustainable growth, ensuring that no one is left behind.
