The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has stressed the importance of including women at every stage of planning and implementing climate action.

According to her, women are not just victims of climate change but also key players in finding solutions to its challenges.

The Minister shared these views during a meeting with Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, who paid her a courtesy visit. Both leaders agreed that women’s voices and perspectives are essential in creating effective climate strategies.

In a statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Jonathan Eze, Sulaiman-Ibrahim explained that women are vital to the fight against climate change because they often play critical roles in managing natural resources and leading communities.

She promised the Ministry’s full support in empowering women to contribute to a sustainable and climate-resilient Nigeria.

Dr. Maduekwe pointed out that women, especially in rural areas, are heavily impacted by climate change since their livelihoods often depend on natural resources.

She emphasized that while women are vulnerable to climate challenges, they also have the potential to lead efforts to adapt to and fight these impacts.

“Women are resource managers, caregivers, and leaders in their communities. With the right support, they can drive meaningful change and build climate resilience,” Dr. Maduekwe said.

Both leaders called for stronger partnerships between the Ministry of Women Affairs and the National Council on Climate Change to create gender-friendly climate policies. Their goal is to protect women from the adverse effects of climate change while empowering them to be part of the solution.

The Minister praised Dr. Maduekwe for her dedication to including a gender perspective in addressing climate change, ensuring women’s contributions are recognized and supported.
