The Yobe State Government has partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) to launch a groundbreaking floodwater harvesting project, aimed at transforming floodwater into a sustainable resource for agriculture.
This initiative is a lifeline for communities reeling from the devastating impacts of recurrent flooding, which has led to widespread displacement, destruction of farmlands, and heightened food insecurity between 2022 and 2024.
Governor Mai Mala Buni has championed proactive measures to address the challenges posed by flooding, including early weather forecasts, community awareness campaigns, and innovative floodwater management strategies.
The project took a significant step forward with an inception meeting led by Dr. Goje Mohammed, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, and Al Hassan Cisse, head of the FAO-UN team.
Dr. Goje revealed that the initiative will focus on capturing floodwater for dry-season farming, with pilot sites proposed in the Nangere and Karasuwa Local Government Areas.
This collaboration between the Yobe State Government and the FAO-UN represents a pivotal step toward building resilience and ensuring a more sustainable future for communities affected by flooding.
