by AgroNigeria

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has launched the distribution of agricultural support materials to 1,000 farming households, including displaced persons from Mallam Dunari and members of their host communities.

The flag-off ceremony, held on Monday at the Government House in Damaturu, was attended by development partners from the European Union and representatives of the Swiss government.

This initiative is designed to enhance agricultural output and strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable groups. Beneficiaries for the rainy season will receive insecticides, sprayers, hoes, and cutlasses, while those engaged in dry-season farming will be provided with water pumps, improved seeds, fertilisers, and other vital resources.

Governor Mai Mala Buni stated that the people of Mallam Dunari are the last group awaiting resettlement.

He announced that each beneficiary will receive farming inputs tailored to the season: those farming during the rainy season will be given insecticides, knapsack sprayers, hoes, and cutlasses, while dry-season farmers will receive water pumps, improved seeds for crops such as onions, tomatoes, cabbage, pepper, rice, lettuce, and carrots, along with knapsack sprayers, watering pipes, fertilisers, and other essential items.

He further revealed that his administration has spent over ₦4 billion on agricultural empowerment across the state’s 178 wards. This includes the purchase of tractors, fertilisers, and other inputs aimed at increasing productivity and ensuring food security.

Governor Buni also noted that, in collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the state government has provided additional agricultural inputs and livestock to 2,000 households in Geidam, Tarmuwa, and Damaturu.

As part of efforts to build sustainable livelihoods, farming communities have received training in animal husbandry and will be supported with small ruminants.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Muktar Dunari expressed gratitude to the state government for extending support to internally displaced persons and host communities.

He urged recipients to use the resources responsibly and cautioned against selling them. He also encouraged the public to continue supporting Governor Buni’s programmes and initiatives.
