Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has announced that farmers in the state will resume full-scale cultivation in 2025 as security improves.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling issues that have hindered farming and contributed to food insecurity, promising to restore the state’s agricultural vitality.
Speaking with reporters after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Alia expressed optimism about Benue’s agricultural future, describing it as an essential step toward solidifying the state’s status as the “food basket of the nation.”
“Benue does not need to discuss food insecurity,” Alia declared. “Instead, we should be focusing on supporting the federal government in assisting other states that are facing significant food insecurity challenges.”
He explained that his government has been actively working to encourage farmers to return to their farms, with substantial support from the federal government.
“During the campaign, the Vice President, as a candidate, pledged to support us with tractors and essential farm inputs, and he has been fulfilling that promise. This year, we are going back to the farm 100 percent,” Alia noted.
The governor attributed the renewed interest and enthusiasm for farming to the federal government’s dedication to revitalizing agriculture across Nigeria.
According to him, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the state has received immense support in its efforts to boost food production.
“The president has been supporting us very hugely, and we are determined to live up to our reputation as the food basket of the nation,” Alia stated.
In addition to agricultural support, Alia emphasized that improvements in security are also critical in boosting farming activities throughout Benue.
He commended the federal government for its role in restoring peace to the state and revealed that his administration has taken additional measures to further enhance security.
