Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has announced the state’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to establish ranching infrastructure aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s livestock sector.
During a courtesy visit to the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, in Abuja, Governor Lawal emphasized Zamfara’s agrarian nature and its commitment to agricultural advancement.
“Zamfara is an agrarian society, and that is why our motto is, ‘Farming is our Pride.’ We aim to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry to fully explore our state’s agricultural potential,” Governor Lawal stated.
Minister Maiha, acknowledging Zamfara’s significant cattle population and existing grazing reserves, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership.
He indicated that Zamfara would serve as a pilot state for the ministry’s initiatives, aiming to transform the livestock sector through genetic upgrades, disease control, and infrastructure development.
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, established in July 2024 by President Bola Tinubu, seeks to reform Nigeria’s livestock industry, create a safe environment, encourage investment, and enhance food security.
Governor Lawal also highlighted the need for rehabilitating earth dams in Zamfara to support livestock and invited the minister to visit the state for an on-ground assessment.
However, this collaboration is expected to modernize livestock practices, improve economic opportunities for farmers, and address challenges such as farmer-herder conflicts.
The partnership aligns with the federal government’s agenda to develop the livestock sector into a vibrant and sustainable industry, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economy and food security.
