Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly has called for the establishment of ranches in every local government area as a lasting solution to farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria.
He emphasized that organized ranching, as seen in developed countries, would reduce violent clashes, improve livestock productivity, and modernize Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Highlighting global models, Nwoko noted that nations with structured farming systems, like the UK and Morocco, have thriving agricultural industries that support their economies.
He stressed that Nigeria must adopt similar strategies, ensuring that livestock farmers have designated spaces for grazing, rather than roaming freely and causing conflicts with crop farmers.
Beyond security concerns, the senator pointed out that ranching would create employment opportunities, boost dairy and meat production, and contribute to national food security.
He argued that with proper policies and funding, agriculture could become a major driver of Nigeria’s economy, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening local food systems.
Nwoko also criticized the country’s dependence on foreign reserves managed abroad, linking it to weak economic policies that hinder self-sufficiency.
He called for a shift towards local production, urging policymakers to prioritize agriculture as a pathway to national stability and economic growth.
