Group Seeks Integration of Organic Fertiliser Into PFI

by AgroNigeria

The Organic Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria is urging the government to give organic fertiliser a formal place within the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative. The association believes that the national programme will deliver greater results if organic products are recognised as essential tools for farming rather than optional supplements.

Alhaji Adams Musa, the president of the association, explained that the country’s soils are losing vitality and that farmers across many regions are searching for safer and more economical ways to increase harvests. He noted that organic fertiliser can help restore degraded land, improve crop quality, support regenerative farming and reduce long term production expenses for small growers.

During the media engagement, Musa emphasised that improving the health of the soil and surrounding environment ultimately improves the health of the population. He said that sustainable agricultural systems must become the foundation of national food security, especially at a time when climate conditions are becoming increasingly unpredictable.

He acknowledged the government’s investment in local fertiliser blending under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative, describing it as a programme that has stabilised prices, created employment opportunities and limited the country’s dependence on imported inputs. According to him, these gains can be consolidated if organic fertiliser becomes part of the national framework.

The association is also asking the authorities to fully enforce existing rules that allow only the Federal Government to import fertiliser raw materials. Musa said adherence to this policy would curb the circulation of poor-quality products, protect local industries and prevent distortions in the market.

He added that millions of farmers would benefit from a more balanced fertiliser system that recognises both organic and inorganic nutrients, which he said is necessary for durable productivity and environmental protection.
