Bauchi: Farmers Urged to Cultivate Drought-tolerant, Early-maturing Seed Varieties

The Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has advised farmers across the state to cultivate drought-tolerant and early-maturing seed varieties to reduce the risk of crop losses during the farming season.

The Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at the agency, Adamu Nayola, gave the advice on Wednesday in Bauchi, stressing the need for farmers to consult agricultural professionals before planting.

According to him, seeking expert guidance on suitable seed varieties has become necessary due to projected weather conditions that could affect agricultural productivity in the state.

Mr Nayola noted that the recommendation is aimed at helping farmers maintain yields despite forecasts indicating that 12 local government areas may experience flooding.

“Farmers should seek advice on the appropriate seed to plant, especially those that mature early, in view of the anticipated dry spell and flooding in the state,” he said.

He explained that Bauchi State is expected to record more rainfall during the 2026 wet season compared to the previous year, a situation that could heighten flood risks in susceptible communities.

“The state is projected to experience a dry spell during the rainy season. Rainfall is expected to commence in late May and last for approximately 159 days,” he said.

Mr Nayola also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to public sensitisation and emergency response efforts. He urged residents to adopt environmentally responsible practices to help prevent flooding, erosion and other related disasters.
