The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has called for strengthened bilateral ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea, highlighting key areas of mutual benefit such as security, agriculture, and climate change.

Speaking during a meeting on Tuesday with the Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Kim Pankyu, and other officials of the Korean embassy at the National Assembly in Abuja, Akpabio described the visit as a “major milestone” in the relationship between the two nations.

He emphasized that the partnership would further consolidate the existing bond.

“There are numerous areas for collaboration, especially on the urgent issue of climate change, where Nigeria is significantly impacted,” Akpabio noted.

He also underscored Nigeria’s critical role in regional stability, adding that the country’s growing population demands closer cooperation with partners like Korea.

He added, “We look forward to learning from Korea in areas such as security, agriculture, poverty eradication, and climate change. We would also welcome a Nigerian-Korean parliamentary cooperation to enhance these efforts.”

In response, Ambassador Kim Pankyu emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral relations, particularly in economic exchange, which he identified as a central pillar of their cooperation.

He noted that the potential for economic collaboration between the two countries is greater than ever.

“The Korean government is keen to strengthen its ties with African countries, as evidenced by the recent Korean-African summit held in June. With President Tinubu’s policies aimed at improving Nigeria’s business environment, I am confident that more Korean companies will explore opportunities in Nigeria, further boosting bilateral trade,” the Ambassador stated.
