by AgroNigeria

The Federal Government has announced plans to enhance support for farmers through increased agricultural inputs and sustainable farming initiatives aimed at boosting natural food production while reducing use of assorted chemicals in agriculture

Speaking at the 46th National Council on Agriculture and Food Security meeting in Calabar, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, emphasized the need to reduce the excessive use of chemicals in farming.

He stated that the government is prioritizing the large-scale adoption of organic fertilizers for both smallholder and commercial farmers.

“The entire approach is to enhance agricultural productivity and production in the country. Our assistance to farmers in providing inputs has significantly contributed to crop output. We will continue to support rural communities with infrastructure such as roads, electricity, boreholes, and appropriate technologies,” Kyari said.

The minister also urged stakeholders and international partners to uphold inclusiveness, transparency, and collaboration to strengthen agribusiness in the country.

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, commended the Federal Government’s agricultural initiatives, expressing optimism that they will uplift farmers and ensure food security.

Otu revealed that Cross River State has made substantial investments in agriculture to reposition the sector in the coming months.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Temitope Fashedemi, added that the council meeting aims to align ideas and strategies to harness the full potential of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
