Borno Gov. Calls for Revitalization of Irrigation Projects Across Country  to Enhance Food Security

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has urged for the revitalization of two irrigation projects in the state to bolster food security across Nigeria.

Following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Governor Zulum highlighted the importance of reestablishing the South Chad and Yauri irrigation projects, which have been affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeastern region.

The Governor emphasized the significant potential of the South Chad irrigation project to address food needs not only in northern Nigeria but also nationwide.

He urged for the establishment of a robust security outfit in the Lake Chad Basin to ensure safe access to agricultural lands and facilitate the revival of the irrigation projects.

Additionally, Zulum called for the revitalization of the Yauri irrigation project, expressing confidence that the restoration of both projects would contribute significantly to enhancing food security in Borno State and the entire country.

Governor Zulum however, discussed the repatriation of Nigerians seeking refuge in the Republic of Chad, Niger, and Cameroon due to insecurity in their communities.

He noted that repatriation efforts were initiated during the previous administration but were temporarily halted due to the election period and rainy season.

Assuring the resumption of the repatriation exercise, Governor Zulum stated that President Tinubu has committed to continuing efforts to bring back Nigerians living in neighboring countries, particularly those from Borno State, to address the humanitarian challenges posed by displacement and insecurity.
