Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to extend the ongoing road construction project to benefit agrarian communities in Ayamelum Local Government Area.
Led by Abuchi Udemezue, the lawmakers highlighted the critical infrastructure and security challenges faced by Ayamelum due to the poor condition of the sole road connecting it to the rest of the state. This road serves a predominantly farming community and is a significant source of inconvenience.
Extending the road construction project, they argued, would have a two-fold benefit: improved accessibility and enhanced security. The lawmakers expressed concern about the vulnerability of the current single access route to frequent kidnappings, posing a risk to all travelers.
Udemezue stated, “We urge Governor Soludo to extend the ongoing construction of the Amansea/Awba Ofemili Road in Awka North Local Government Area to Umerum in Ayamelum. This extension would not only facilitate the transportation of agricultural goods to Awka but also enhance economic opportunities for the community.
“A connection between Ayamelum Local Government Area and the state capital through the Amansea/Awba Ofemili Road via Umerum would reduce transportation costs for agricultural goods produced in Ayamelum.
“Furthermore, considering the security threat posed by the single route in and out of Ayamelum, an alternative route would create challenges for kidnappers and other criminals operating in the area.”
The motion received support from other lawmakers, including Ebuka Igwe, Noble Igwe, Patrick Udoba, Obi Nweke, Jude Ngobili, Jude Umennujiego, and Ikwunne Chimezie, among others.
