Farmers, Herders Urged to Promote Peaceful Coexistence

by AgroNigeria

The National Coordinator, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) Mr Sanusi Abubakar, has urged farmers and herders to promote peaceful coexistence.

The National Project Coordinator made the appeal in an interview  on Monday in Abuja.

Abubakar stressed the need for a systemic approach to resolving farmer-herder conflicts, describing both groups as essential parts of the same agricultural ecosystem.

“The issue of farmer-herder relations requires a strategic and structured approach.

“We are committed to ensuring both livestock and crop farmers have the resources to coexist peacefully.

“Crisis prevention and mitigation are key components of the L-PRES initiative, with a strong focus on two major conflict drivers — access to water and pasture.

“As part of our interventions, we have begun constructing boreholes and providing pasture in targeted clusters, benefiting 459,000 stakeholders in the livestock value chain,” he explained.

According to him, L-PRES is improving access to veterinary and healthcare facilities within livestock value chain clusters.

“By ensuring herders have essential services within their communities, we reduce the need for constant movement, which is a major factor in farmer-herder conflicts,” he noted.
