The Department of Animal Health Technology at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT) on Monday launched a rabies awareness campaign in neighboring communities surrounding the campus.
Speaking after the outreach, Dr. Ifeoluwa Akanbi, Head of the Department, stated: “Today, we conducted a rabies awareness outreach in five communities, including the Federal College of Agriculture (FCA), Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), the junior staff quarters, IAR&T staff school, and our own FCAH&PT.”
The initiative involved not only raising awareness but also providing banners with essential information about rabies to each community. “We want this to be more than a one-day event,” Dr. Akanbi explained.
“By donating banners, we hope to keep the information visible, with community leaders agreeing to display them in strategic locations to ensure continued access to these critical details.”
Dean of the School of Animal Health, FCAH&PT, Dr. Jolade Aderonke Sansi, further emphasized the importance of proactive rabies prevention.
“Many people know about rabies but lack awareness of how to prevent it. Rabies has no cure, so prevention is key,” she noted. “Without awareness, people cannot take the necessary steps to protect themselves and their communities.”
Dr. Sansi stressed the need for responsible pet ownership, particularly for dog owners. “If you cannot care for your dog, it poses a threat not only to you and your family but also to the wider environment. This campaign is focused on educating everyone, regardless of literacy level, about the dangers of rabies and the importance of prevention.”
