FG Urged to Prioritize Agricultural Investment, Revitalize Nigeria’s Economy

by AgroNigeria

George Moghalu, a Labour Party chieftain and former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on the Federal Government to adopt innovative strategies and place a strong emphasis on agricultural investment as a means of revitalizing Nigeria’s economy.

He expressed concerns over the continued decline of the agricultural sector, which was once the backbone of Nigeria’s economy before the nation became heavily reliant on oil.

During an appearance on TV, Moghalu highlighted the urgent need for a creative overhaul in the country’s economic approach.

He commended President Buhari for some of his courageous decisions but emphasized that more is required to effectively address the nation’s economic challenges.

According to Moghalu, the government must think beyond conventional solutions, re-engineer the economy, and prioritize sectors like agriculture, which could provide long-term benefits for the populace.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s past, he noted, “Before the advent of oil, we had a strong agriculture-based economy. You talk about the pyramid in the North, you talk about palm produce in the South-East, you talk about cocoa in the South-West. Look at the investments that were made by our leaders then using agriculture.”

Moghalu’s call for agricultural revitalization came alongside a critique of the current state of insecurity, particularly in his home state of Anambra.

He underscored that the fundamental role of government, as outlined in the constitution, is to ensure the safety and security of its citizens and their property.

He also emphasized that no matter how much the government invests in other sectors, such investments will not yield tangible results unless the security situation is addressed.

“Every effort you make towards economic development is futile unless you first tackle the issue of insecurity,” he stated.

The LP chieftain’s concerns about security were particularly poignant in light of recent incidents in Anambra State, where violence and criminal activities have escalated.

He cited several troubling examples of kidnappings and killings, including the abduction of two reverend sisters, Vincentia Nwankwo and Grace Okoli, who were released after six days in captivity. The sisters were kidnapped along Ufuma Road in Orumba North Local Government Area while returning from a vocational association meeting in Ogboji.

Moghalu pointed out the alarming frequency of such incidents, stating, “Not a day goes by in Anambra State without hearing of another negative story. It is either somebody has been kidnapped or somebody has been killed.”

He referenced a series of high-profile cases, including the kidnapping of a retired Anglican archbishop who was held for nearly a month, the abduction of two principals of schools, the assassination of a lecturer in Awka, and the ongoing captivity of a member of the House of Assembly.

“We need to ask ourselves honest questions, we must remove politics from security,” he added.
