by AgroNigeria

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, Tuesday , flagged off the construction of the Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant and Service Centre, a key agricultural investment by Denmark’s ODK Group, in Enugu City.

This development marks a significant step in the governor’s plan to modernize agriculture and drive economic growth in the state.

On the same day, Mbah also commissioned the New-Watson Doors Industry, established by a Chinese firm in Nachi, Enugu State.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Nortra Tractors Plant, Governor Mbah emphasized the importance of agriculture in his administration’s goal of expanding Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

He underscored the significance of increasing mechanized farming through the assembly of 800 tractors locally, which will stimulate the agricultural sector and create employment opportunities.

“This is not just a symbolic act; it is a concrete step toward realizing our dream of having at least 1,000 tractors in Enugu State by next year,” Mbah stated.

He explained that only 200 tractors would be imported fully assembled, while the remaining 800 will be assembled locally in Enugu.

This move, he added, would boost the state’s economy and create jobs in the agricultural sector.

Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning Enugu as a premier destination for investors by creating an enabling environment.

“We will continue to provide the basic amenities, infrastructure, and security needed for investments to thrive,” he said, assuring investors of the state’s unwavering support.

Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry, Adaora Chukwu, hailed ODK Group’s decision to make Enugu the site of its first African investment.

She highlighted the company’s expertise in manufacturing agricultural machinery and its potential to significantly boost agricultural production in the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, described the project as a groundbreaking achievement for agriculture in Enugu.

ODK Group Denmark’s CEO, Mr. Morten Anderson, and Nortra Tractors’ Managing Director, Mr. Philip Njoku, explained that Enugu was chosen as the company’s entry point into Africa due to the state’s innovation and economic growth.

Later in the day, Governor Mbah commissioned the New-Watson Doors Industry in Nachi. He recalled how the company initially considered other locations for its investment in 2023 but ultimately chose Enugu due to the state government’s proactive efforts to attract investors.

“We are committed to creating an enabling environment for investors to succeed,” Mbah stated, adding that his administration would continue to patronize local businesses by sourcing materials for major projects, such as the 260 Smart Green Schools and 260 Type 2 Healthcare Centres, from within the state.

Chen Shando, CEO of New-Watson, expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah for the “massive support” provided by the government and people of Enugu State, reaffirming the company’s commitment to contributing to the state’s economic growth.
