In a bid to enhance agricultural production and ensure food security, the Kano State Government has distributed free fertilisers worth over N1 billion to smallholder farmers, including women and people with disabilities.
However, each beneficiary will receive 25kg of NPK fertiliser to support their farming activities, which is expected to boost crop yields and improve livelihoods.
Governor Abba Yusuf, while unveiling the distribution, stated that this initiative fulfils his campaign promise to improve livelihoods through investment in agriculture and agribusiness.
During his campaign for the 2023 elections, Governor Yusuf pledged to transform agriculture by providing quality and affordable agricultural inputs, as outlined in his 70-page blueprint, “My Commitment for Kano.”
The distributed fertilisers, worth over N1 billion, were produced by the State-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) and were given to 52,800 smallholder farmers across the 44 local government areas.
Governor Yusuf explained that the initiative aims to reduce production costs and boost food security.
Furthermore, the State Executive Council has approved the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilisers, which will soon be available to Kano farmers at subsidised rates.
Governor Yusuf emphasised that this support would help farmers, who are currently struggling with high input and labour costs due to economic challenges, to enhance their productivity.
