Lawmaker Lauds Establishment of Federal Agriculture University Bassambiri

Chief Edward Irigha-Brigidi, representing Nembe Constituency II in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, has expressed his enthusiasm for the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture Bassambiri (FUAB).

The lawmaker, speaking on behalf of his constituents, extended gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the university’s location in Bassambiri, Nembe Local Government Area.

Irigha-Brigidi also commended former petroleum minister, Chief Timipre Sylva, former senator Chief B.W Degi-Eremienyo, former House of Representatives member Hon. Israel Sunny-Goli, and other stakeholders for their pivotal roles in the establishment of the university in Bayelsa State.

In a statement made available to journalists, Irigha-Brigidi highlighted the significance of the university’s establishment, emphasizing its potential to positively impact the local economy and Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

He said, “I am very happy about the establishment of such a relevant institution in Opu-Nembe Kingdom, precisely Bassambiri. This marks a turning point for our community. It is a demonstration of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, the groundwork laid by former President Buhari.”

He further noted the benefits the university would bring to the local community, stating that it would create job opportunities, boost businesses, and improve infrastructure.

He added that the university would produce competent and self-reliant graduates who would contribute significantly to the nation’s quest for food security, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Moreover, Irigha-Brigidi expressed confidence that the university would attract both local and international partnerships, foster innovation in sustainable agricultural practices, and amplify economic growth in the region.

He also thanked Governor Douye Diri for providing the necessary support for the successful establishment of the university, acknowledging the governor’s commitment to education and peaceful governance.

Irigha-Brigidi called on the governor to offer financial assistance to complement the Federal Government’s efforts in the university’s initial operations.

He urged the people and various interest groups in Bassambiri to avoid conflicts and embrace cooperation to fully benefit from the educational, economic, and social opportunities that FUAB promises to bring.

The  lawmaker further congratulated the governing council of FUAB, led by Sen. Kojo Brambaifa, and the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Prof. Reginald Inodu Keremah, on their appointments.

He encouraged them to collaborate with the university’s management team to develop strategies, policies, and programs that would establish FUAB as a center of excellence in agricultural education and research in Nigeria.

His words: “The governing council should focus on sustainable and innovative agriculture that typically reflects the evolving needs of the agricultural sector, advancements in technology, and global challenges such as climate change and food security.”
