N11.8bn Inadequate For Livestock Ministry Effective Take-off – NASS

by AgroNigeria

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Livestock Development has described the proposed N11.8 billion budget for the newly established Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as insufficient for its effective take-off.

The Federal Government had requested the National Assembly’s approval of N10 billion for capital expenditure and N1.8 billion for overhead costs in the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

Speaking during the budget defense session, Minister of Livestock Development, Mr. Idi Maiha, led key ministry officials and heads of related agencies to present their case before the committee.

Maiha noted that although the ministry was created only three months ago, efforts were already underway to establish the necessary structures.

He explained that several departments were transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to form the new ministry.

However, he highlighted critical challenges, including the lack of office space, basic facilities, and essential equipment needed for the ministry to function fully.

“The ministry is currently being accommodated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),” Maiha disclosed, adding that discussions had commenced with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister to secure a permanent office.

Despite acknowledging that the budget allocation might be insufficient, the minister expressed optimism that it would provide a foundation for the ministry’s operations.

He assured the committee of the ministry’s commitment to tackling climate change and addressing other environmental concerns affecting livestock production.
