NiMet Guides 70M Farmers to Use Climate Data

by AgroNigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has begun guiding about 70 million subsistence farmers in Nigeria on data-driven farming to enhance agricultural productivity.

The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, disclosed this on Thursday during a partnership meeting with the American-based Global Green Development Group and NOAH ReGen in Abuja.

The partnership aims to support the Jatropha-to-Biofuel programme in Nigeria, aligning with NiMet’s mandate to monitor atmospheric conditions, analyze data, and provide forecasts that drive socio-economic development.

Anosike emphasized that NiMet has an extensive network of climate change stakeholders and has started disseminating its seasonal climate predictions to farmers and other key users.

He noted that the collaboration would allow NiMet to share its climate and weather data to support the biofuel initiative while enhancing responses to climate disasters.

The Chief Executive Officer of Global Green Development Group, Mary Flowers, highlighted the critical role of NiMet’s data in ensuring the project’s success, stating that climate data would drive decision-making and market readiness.

Similarly, the CEO of NOAH ReGen, Frederic Degret, linked the initiative to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s Re’Planet Ecosystem, a global financial platform focused on nature-based assets and carbon credits.

However, the collaboration is expected to enhance climate resilience, promote sustainable agriculture, and contribute to Nigeria’s transition toward biofuel production.
