NiMet to Transform Delivery of Climate Information to Farmers Nationwide

by AgroNigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Agricultural Innovation Mechanism for Scale (AIM for Scale) to transform the delivery of weather and climate information to farmers across Nigeria.

The agreement, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), is set to integrate artificial intelligence into weather forecasting while strengthening digital advisory systems that convert climate data into practical, farm-level guidance.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike, stated that the collaboration marks a major step forward in enhancing climate services for agricultural productivity.

He explained that the initiative will provide farmers with timely rainfall forecasts and actionable weather insights, enabling them to better plan planting and harvesting cycles while minimising risks associated with unpredictable weather patterns.

He emphasised that accurate and timely climate information remains critical to national development, food security, and disaster risk management.

Also speaking, the Director of AIM for Scale, Imara Salas, highlighted the transformative potential of AI-powered forecasting tools in improving agricultural outcomes.

She noted that the integration of advanced technologies into advisory systems will enhance crop yields, optimise resource use, and build resilience among millions of smallholder farmers, demonstrating the power of innovation in driving large-scale agricultural impact.

The partnership is expected to strengthen NiMet’s capacity to deliver tailored climate services to farmers and other stakeholders, while advancing forecasting capabilities through data-driven solutions.

AIM for Scale, supported by the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court and the Gates Foundation, will work with NiMet to deploy AI-driven forecasting systems that translate complex weather data into clear, actionable insights designed to meet farmers’ needs across the country.
