NiMet, WOFAN Discuss Strategic Measures to Mitigate Climate Disasters, Enhance Agricultural Resilience in Nigeria

by AgroNigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) have discussed strategic measures to mitigate climate disasters and enhance agricultural resilience in Nigeria.

Speaking during a meeting in Abuja, NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, commended WOFAN for its commitment to empowering smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth.

He described the partnership as one of his most significant achievements, given its potential to boost agricultural productivity across the country.

Anosike emphasized that with Nigeria’s heavy reliance on rain-fed agriculture, timely access to climate and weather information is crucial for farmers.

He noted that the partnership with WOFAN—an organization with a network of nearly 700,000 farmers—would help disseminate NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction data to guide farmers in adapting to weather patterns, minimizing losses, and improving yields.

WOFAN’s Founder, Hajia Salamatu Garba, lauded NiMet for its consistent release of climate information and expressed confidence that the partnership would provide direct access to vital weather data for farmers.

She reaffirmed WOFAN’s commitment to promoting climate-smart agriculture and ensuring farmers are better prepared for climate-related challenges.

However, both organizations are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the partnership, ensuring a structured approach to climate adaptation strategies for Nigerian farmers.
