Herdsmen in Ogun State have been given a firm deadline to register with the state’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
According to the state government, the registration must be completed by March 31, 2025, through the Ministry’s Department of Veterinary Services.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 18, Kehinde Jokotoye, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, revealed that the registration process is being conducted in partnership with the Ogun chapter of the South West Commodity Farmers Organisation.
Jokotoye explained that creating a database of herders in the state would significantly strengthen security efforts, improve livestock management, and help resolve potential conflicts.
She also noted that the state government has discovered that several private veterinary practitioners and veterinary pharmaceutical businesses are operating without proper authorization.
Additionally, she pointed out that slaughter slabs, cattle markets, and live bird markets are also functioning illegally in Ogun State without the necessary approvals and licenses from the Department of Veterinary Services.
Jokotoye warned that anyone involved in these illegal activities must cease immediately or face legal consequences under the Animal Disease Control Act of 2022.
She urged all relevant parties to ensure they acquire the proper documentation and registration from the government to operate within the law.
