Plateau Govt Addressing Agricultural Challenges to Boost Productivity – Commissioner

by AgroNigeria

Plateau State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Samson Ishaku Bugama, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to transforming its agricultural sector through strategic interventions aimed at boosting productivity, addressing challenges, and empowering youth.

Bugama dismissed claims of a decline in tomato production in the state, stating that while the Plateau remains a major producer of tomatoes, misbranding by middlemen may have contributed to the perception of decline.

He highlighted that the government’s strategic interventions, including the creation of a crop zone, have significantly increased tomato production, even leading to a decrease in prices.

In response to the persistent insecurity that has affected farmers, Bugama noted a marked improvement since 2023, thanks to interventions by Governor Caleb Mutfwang. He also cited the government’s efforts to rehabilitate communities affected by crises, such as cultivating 6,000 hectares for displaced farmers.

Addressing the issue of market access, Bugama revealed the establishment of Plateau Commodity Marketing Company Limited (PLACOM), designed to bridge the gap between farmers and markets. The initiative is intended to ensure farmers receive fair value for their produce, while also bringing the market to them rather than waiting for farmers to seek it out.

The commissioner also discussed the state’s approach to climate change, explaining that the government is collaborating with a world-class company to provide accurate weather forecasts and farming calendars. These services will help farmers adjust their practices to better cope with unpredictable weather patterns.

Speaking on the role of technology, Bugama shared that the state is incorporating modern farming techniques, including mechanization and technological tools like the Plateau Input Distribution System, which allows farmers to access subsidies and inputs efficiently.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector, Bugama explained the state’s focus on processing and value addition. The state is investing in Special Agricultural Processing Zones in areas like Hypan, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Shendam to encourage industrial processing of local agricultural products, thus enhancing profitability for farmers.

In terms of infrastructure, Bugama pointed to the government’s investment in rural access roads under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), along with ongoing efforts to improve irrigation systems and storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses.

Bugama also emphasized the importance of youth involvement in agriculture. The state has trained hundreds of young people in modern agricultural practices and is working to provide access to finance through initiatives like the Agric file, a financial solution aimed at supporting young farmers.

In collaboration with private sector players, NGOs, and international organizations, the state government is working to improve resource access for farmers and boost agricultural development.

Bugama highlighted the government’s strong partnership with various stakeholders, including international NGOs, to foster growth in the sector.

Concluding his remarks, Bugama called on the people of Plateau and Nigerians to embrace agriculture as a path to food sovereignty.

He stressed that while the government will continue to create an enabling environment, the success of agriculture ultimately rests on the farmers’ commitment and responsible use of resources.
