Katsina Signs Pact With OCP Africa on Fertiliser Production

by AgroNigeria

As part of efforts to transform agriculture in Katsina State, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with OCP Africa, a leading player in the global fertiliser production industry.

The signing ceremony followed a visit by the Governor to the company’s expansive fertiliser production complex in Jorf, Morocco, which is considered the largest of its kind in the world.

Speaking at the event, Governor Radda expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that the collaboration with OCP Africa’s Nigerian subsidiary would provide crucial support to local farmers.

He emphasised that the goal of the partnership was to equip farmers in the state with high-quality seeds, fertilisers, and modern farming techniques, all aimed at improving agricultural yields and reducing waste.

The Governor also highlighted his administration’s commitment to revitalising the agricultural sector, which he sees as a key driver of socio-economic development and food security in the state.

He pointed out that significant investments are being made in agricultural mechanisation and the development of ancillary facilities to support the growth of the sector.

Governor Radda further noted the vast mineral resources in the state, specifically referencing the large deposits of lime in Katsina, which are a crucial component in fertiliser production.

He expressed interest in engaging with OCP Africa to explore opportunities for leveraging these natural resources, potentially contributing to the local fertiliser supply chain.

Mohamed Hettiti, the acting CEO of OCP Africa, represented the company during the MoU signing, with Kessab Abdeljalil standing in for him.

Hettiti reiterated OCP Africa’s strong commitment to supporting food security and sovereignty across Nigeria and the African continent. The company’s efforts are aimed at driving sustainable agricultural practices and improving food production capabilities across the region.

Oluwatoba Asana, the Country Manager for OCP Africa in Nigeria, reflected on the long-standing relationship between OCP Africa and Katsina State, which dates back to 2018.

He reassured the Governor that the company would continue to support the state’s agricultural ambitions by implementing proven initiatives designed to increase productivity among local farmers.

These initiatives include the development of crop- and soil-specific fertiliser blends that are tailored to the unique agricultural conditions of Katsina State, as well as the establishment of OCP Farm and Fortune Hubs. These hubs will be located in State-owned warehouses and will provide farmers with access to high-quality agricultural inputs and modern farming information.

In addition to these efforts, the partnership will also focus on soil mapping through the OCP School Lab Initiative and the provision of specialised training for Katsina State’s extension officers. This training will enhance the ability of these officers to provide better support and guidance to local farmers, improving overall agricultural practices in the region.
