The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called for increased investment in agricultural mechanisation and technology to move Nigeria’s agriculture beyond subsistence production and position the sector for stronger export growth.
The ACCI President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while unveiling plans for the maiden Agricultural Mechanisation for Export-Quality Products in Africa (AGROMEQA) Expo 2026.
Obegolu said mechanisation was essential to unlocking Nigeria’s agricultural potential, noting that modern farming systems could improve productivity, create jobs, strengthen rural economies and contribute to food security.
He said the country could no longer rely predominantly on traditional farming methods, stressing the need to combine mechanisation with technology, innovation, research and investment to build a competitive agricultural sector capable of producing to international standards.
According to him, the AGROMEQA Expo, organised by the Agricultural Trade Group and JMT Plus Farms and Agro-Allied in collaboration with ACCI, would provide a platform for technology transfer, value addition and investment across the agricultural value chain.
The expo, scheduled for October under the theme, “Technology and Investment for Agro-Export,” was initially planned for an earlier date but was shifted after consultations with stakeholders to allow exhibitors, investors, government institutions and other participants adequate time to prepare.
Obegolu said the theme reflected the urgent need to transform agriculture into a technology-driven and investment-led sector, adding that the initiative aligned with national priorities on food security, economic diversification, job creation, industrial development and export-led growth.
He said the expo would showcase mechanised agricultural equipment, precision farming technologies, irrigation systems, agro-processing innovations, modern packaging solutions and climate-smart technologies, among others.
Beyond exhibitions, he said the event would feature plenary sessions, technical discussions, workshops, business-to-business engagements and investment forums aimed at connecting technology providers with farmers, processors, investors and other players across the value chain.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to officially declare the expo open, while the NACCIMA President, Engr. Jani Ibrahim, is expected to deliver the keynote address.
The expo is expected to bring together policymakers, agribusiness investors, machinery manufacturers, technology providers, research institutions, farmers’ associations, development partners, financial institutions, agro-processors, exporters, logistics operators and international organisations.
