Red Cross Seeks N2.5bn to Support Most Vulnerable Nigerians

by AgroNigeria

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has launched an emergency appeal to raise N2.5 billion to support the most vulnerable individuals across Nigeria over the next 18 months.

This initiative, supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, aims to enhance livelihoods, health, nutrition, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in severely affected regions.

“The Nigerian Red Cross Society intends to raise N2.5 billion to mitigate the effects of severe hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria,” said Chima Nwankwo, NRCS Coordinator of Communications and Advocacy.

Unless emergency measures are taken, over 31.5 million Nigerians will face food insecurity between January and October 2024, exacerbated by conflict, inflation, and economic challenges.

Research indicates that staple food prices will triple by October 2024, and cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition among children have increased by 70% since September 2023.

The NRCS President, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, emphasized the urgency, saying, “We are excited to bring together leaders and influencers for an unforgettable night dedicated to making a real difference. The funds raised will go directly towards our ongoing efforts to alleviate hunger and improve water and sanitation conditions for vulnerable communities.”

The NRCS will host its first-ever Annual Fundraising Gala Night in Lagos, themed “Keeping Humanity Alive,” to support this appeal.
