Tension As Army Raises Alarm Over Mass Cattle Influx Into Plateau Farming LGA

by AgroNigeria

Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, has voiced concerns over the escalating security threats triggered by the mass movement of cattle into Barkin Ladi local government area of Plateau State.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement in Barkin Ladi on Tuesday, Oyinlola revealed that the influx has already resulted in widespread farm destruction, a rise in isolated attacks, and other unlawful activities.

He emphasized that these developments are endangering both the economic survival of the region and the fragile peace efforts being nurtured in Plateau State.

He emphasized that while cattle movement is common in the region, the scale and timing of the current influx raise significant security red flags.

Oyinlola highlighted the ongoing farming season as a particularly sensitive period, noting that any disruption to agricultural activities at this time could have severe repercussions for food supply and the local economy.

He linked the recent rise in violence and attacks on both farms and livestock to the unchecked movement of herders and animals into predominantly farming communities.

The Army commander also addressed the recent spate of killings in the area, assuring that efforts are underway to identify and bring those behind the violence to justice.

He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring calm and preventing further escalation of tensions.

The stakeholder engagement, attended by traditional leaders, religious figures, security officials, and government representatives, was organized to enhance collaboration and maintain peace in the area. Oyinlola urged community leaders to work closely with security agencies and promote vigilance among residents.
