The Minister of Livestock, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has called for a reconsideration of the 2025 budgetary allocations for the Ministry of Livestock, urging a significant increase in both the capital expenditure and the overhead budget.
He made the request during a joint hearing with the Senate and House of Representatives committees on Livestock Development, where he presented the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
Maiha outlined the ministry’s allocation of N10 billion for capital projects and N1.8 billion for overheads, emphasizing that the figures were insufficient to meet the demands of a growing livestock sector.
He highlighted the importance of allocating these funds across the country’s six geopolitical zones, specifically targeting areas with a high concentration of livestock issues.
The minister also mentioned that particular focus would be given to addressing the sector’s urgent needs such as ranch infrastructure, veterinary services, and the creation of sustainable market routes.
Despite recognizing the limited fiscal envelope, Maiha expressed confidence that additional financial support could be secured through international partnerships and grants.
He emphasized the importance of drawing in both local and foreign investments, which he said would stimulate job creation, enhance productivity, and promote a robust livestock industry capable of meeting both national and international demands.
During the session, Maiha also provided updates on the ministry’s ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy for the future.
He disclosed that the white paper detailing the transition of agencies within the ministry was in its final stages of preparation and would soon be ready. This document is expected to play a major role in guiding the ministry’s next steps, ensuring smooth transitions within the organizational structure, and facilitating the efficient execution of planned programs.
In his remarks, Musa Mustapha, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock Development, commended the ministry’s work thus far but urged for regular reports to be submitted regarding challenges faced by the sector.
He noted that while the ministry is still in its formative stage, its long-term success depends on establishing a strong foundation.
Mustapha further emphasized the need for consistent updates, particularly concerning accommodation and logistical issues, to ensure that the ministry’s goals are met and its programs are effectively implemented.
“We expect you to provide regular reports on the challenges you are facing, especially in terms of accommodation and other pressing needs. These updates are essential to guide our interventions and ensure the ministry fulfils its purpose,” he said.
