Katsina Govt Unveils N5.7bn Goat Rearing Initiative For Women

by AgroNigeria

The Katsina State Government has invested the sum of 5.7 billion naira in a goat-rearing initiative aimed at empowering women and strengthening the agricultural sector.

The program, which will benefit 3,610 women across 361 wards, will provide each participant with four goats. The launch event took place in Dan-Nakolo, Daura Local Government Area, under the leadership of Governor Dikko Radda.

Governor Radda emphasized that the initiative marks part of the state’s efforts to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency and to position Katsina as a leader in livestock farming, not just in northern Nigeria but across the entire country.

He stressed that empowering women through livestock farming would contribute significantly to local economies and enhance food security.

“This initiative, which is worth N5.7 billion, is aimed at empowering rural women, providing them with the resources, training, and support they need to successfully rear goats,” Governor Radda explained.

The governor further noted that livestock farming is not just an economic activity but a vital part of preserving cultural practices and ensuring food security.

His administration is committed to improving livestock breeding, multiplication, and genetic management to enhance the quality of livestock, increase productivity, and improve the health and well-being of the goats.

“We are providing training for farmers, covering essential areas like animal nutrition, health management, and sustainable farming techniques. This will equip them with the knowledge needed to improve productivity and stay resilient against future challenges,” Radda added.

In addition to promoting agricultural growth, the initiative also aims to foster local economic diversification.

The governor highlighted that by strengthening the livestock sector, the program will help create platforms for thriving local markets, contributing to the state’s long-term goal of economic self-reliance.

Yusuf Suleiman, the Special Adviser to the governor on livestock, grazing, and reserves, further emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and poverty reduction.

He noted that women have a crucial role in driving economic progress and improving the livelihoods of their communities.

“This project is a direct response to the critical role women play in rural economies. Equipping them with the right tools and resources will enable them to thrive, ultimately lifting themselves and their communities out of poverty,” Suleiman said.
