The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized the need for stronger trade ties between Nigeria and Mexico, highlighting the significant potential for growth in bilateral commerce.

He made this call during a meeting with a delegation led by the Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Alfredo Miranda, at his office in the National Assembly, Abuja.

Mr. Kalu pointed out that both nations are united not only by a shared commitment to democratic principles but also by a mutual desire for development that directly benefits their citizens.

Citing recent figures, he noted that trade between Nigeria and Mexico reached approximately $500 million in 2022, adding that this figure could increase substantially with the right partnerships and initiatives.

Mr. Benjamin Okezie Kalu suggested that both Nigeria and Mexico should explore trade missions and exchange platforms such as trade fairs to showcase potential business opportunities.

He reiterated the Nigerian government’s dedication to engaging in dialogue, shaping policies, and forming partnerships that will strengthen economic relations, eliminate trade barriers, and open up new investment prospects aimed at fostering shared prosperity.

“On behalf of the leadership and members of the People’s House – the House of Representatives, I warmly welcome you. Your visit is a testament to the strong ties and ongoing cooperation between the Republic of Mexico and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Our friendship is reinforced by mutual interests in trade, education, and cultural interaction,” he stated.

He noted that Nigeria has achieved progress in several key sectors, including agriculture, technology, and infrastructure. Specifically, he highlighted agriculture’s significant contribution of about 21% to Nigeria’s GDP, underscoring its central role in the country’s pursuit of food security and sustainability. He expressed optimism about the possibilities for collaboration with Mexico, especially in agriculture, where both countries can share knowledge and experiences to improve food systems. He also emphasized the potential for joint efforts in renewable energy and innovation, which could drive growth for both nations.

The Deputy Speaker, who also chairs the Constitution Review Committee, called for Mexico’s support in advancing Nigeria’s efforts to increase women’s participation in governance.

He stated that as Nigeria moves forward in its pursuit of gender inclusivity, the country is eager to learn from Mexico’s experiences.

He praised Mexico for leading the way with its feminist foreign policy, which places a strong emphasis on gender equality and the empowerment of women globally. Mr. Kalu expressed confidence that such cooperation would enable Nigeria to adopt effective strategies that support its goal of building a more inclusive and responsive governance system.

In his remarks, Ambassador Alfredo Miranda expressed interest in deepening parliamentary relations between Mexico and Nigeria, while also working collaboratively on issues related to economic development, social progress, and gender equality.

“Nigeria and Mexico need to build a closer relationship. I am aware of Nigeria’s focus on advancing social policies, and we are keen on strengthening parliamentary ties to jointly address areas such as economic growth, social development, and gender equality,” the Ambassador said.
