The National Agency for the Great Green Wall has launched symbolic planting of five million date palm seedlings across 11 frontline states.

The Director-General of NAGGW, Saleh Abubakar, at the activity on Wednesday called on Nigerians to be deliberate about planting and maintaining tree seedlings, urging them to care for the plants as they would their own children.

He said the project was an initiative aimed at tackling climate change while improving community livelihoods.

Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the progress so far, noting that the seedlings were being distributed as planned and that local communities had embraced the programme. “We expect a remarkable outcome from this collaboration with the people,” he said.

Explaining the choice of date palms, the DG highlighted their dual value, pointing out that they not only help the environment but also serve as a sustainable source of income for beneficiaries.

Furthermore, he said communities and stakeholders had been engaged in compiling beneficiary lists, and noted that distribution would begin with registered individuals to enable proper monitoring.

Out of the five million seedlings, Bauchi State will receive 450,000, Abubakar confirmed, urging residents to handle them with care and patience, assuring them that in the long run, the trees will bear fruit and provide lasting economic benefits.

Speaking on behalf of the Emir of Katagum, the Village Head of Azare, Magaji Abdulkadir, underscored the importance of nurturing the seedlings.

“Planting a tree is just the first step; ensuring it grows to maturity is what truly matters. I urge you to take proper care of these seedlings, as the long-term benefits will be yours,” he said.

Abdulkadir emphasized the relevance of tree planting in the Sahel region, noting that the project would not only help restore degraded land but also enhance the livelihoods of nearby communities.
