FG, Ogun Govt Inaugurate $12 Million Agrochemical Plant in Sagamu

by AgroNigeria

The Federal Government, in collaboration with Ogun State, has inaugurated a $12 million agrochemical plant, the Springfield Agro Crop Protection Chemical Plant, located in Sagamu.

This move is part of efforts to enhance food security and strengthen local manufacturing capabilities.

The plant is expected to contribute substantially to agricultural productivity, economic development, and a reduction in the nation’s dependence on imported agrochemicals.

In his remarks at the launch, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who was represented by Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture, underscored the importance of the new plant in enhancing Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.

He emphasized that achieving food security is not possible without expanding the industrial capacity across the value chain, and the new facility is perfectly aligned with the government’s strategy to fight hunger and ensure sustainable food production.

“This project highlights the potential for growth when the public and private sectors collaborate effectively. Achieving peace and economic prosperity requires the dedication of both government efforts and the private sector’s ambition and commitment,” Shettima said.

Adedapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, who was represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, applauded the Kewalram Chanrai Group for its unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

He reaffirmed the Ogun State government’s focus on creating an environment conducive to business growth, stressing the state’s efforts to increase agricultural productivity by improving inputs, mechanization, and extension services. This, he believes, will reduce the cost of staple foods and bring the country closer to achieving food security.

“This event highlights Ogun’s progress in creating an environment where industries can grow.

“Through continuous efforts to improve access to inputs, mechanisation, and extension services, our government has positioned Ogun State to drive higher agricultural productivity, reduce the cost of staple foods, and achieve food security,” he added.

In addition to the plant’s focus on agrochemical production, the project is also making strides in corporate social responsibility by building a hospital aimed at providing quality healthcare services to the local community.

Governor Abiodun assured investors that his administration would continue to create an enabling environment for businesses through strategic policies, infrastructure development, and incentives.

The Springfield Agro Crop Protection Chemical Plant, a subsidiary of Springfield Agro Ltd, under the Kewalram Chanrai Group, will produce herbicides and insecticides, featuring an integrated bottle manufacturing unit.

The factory is expected to create between 300 and 500 direct and indirect jobs, with a significant portion of these opportunities reserved for Ogun State indigenes.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Kewalram Chanrai Group, Narain Chanrai, highlighted the company’s strong commitment to Nigeria’s industrialization journey.

He stated that the success of Springfield Agro in Nigeria has provided the impetus to expand into other African nations.

“This plant will reduce the importation of agrochemicals, save foreign exchange, and support both federal and state government efforts in their backward integration programs,” Chanrai explained.

Springfield Agro Ltd, a prominent player in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, offers comprehensive farm solutions, including seeds, fertilizers, tractors, and agrochemicals.

The plant’s production capacity will initially be 30 million liters per annum, with plans for expansion to 50 million liters, positioning it as a key contributor to meeting Nigeria’s agrochemical needs.

The plant will not only cater to the domestic market but will also serve as a regional export hub, supplying agrochemicals to neighboring West African countries. This is expected to reinforce Nigeria’s standing as an agricultural powerhouse within the region.

Additionally, the facility is anticipated to increase government revenue through taxes, promote local business development, and create more employment opportunities across the country.

Also speaking, an agrochemical products merchant, who was present at the inauguration,

Imuentiyan, said, “This investment is a clear demonstration of both the federal and Ogun state governments’ commitment to fostering an enabling business environment, driving economic growth, and ensuring food security for all Nigerians.”
