Mornings can be busy, and deciding what to eat for breakfast can sometimes feel like a task of its own. Whether you are rushing to work, preparing for a busy day or simply looking for something delicious to enjoy at home, an omelette is an easy breakfast option that never disappoints.
Made with a few everyday ingredients, an omelette is quick to prepare, easy to customise and satisfying enough to start your day on a good note. You can keep it simple with eggs, onions and fresh pepper or make it more colourful by adding vegetables such as carrots, green peppers and spring onions.
The best part? You do not need to be a professional chef to make a tasty omelette. With the right ingredients and a few simple steps, you can prepare a soft, fluffy and flavourful breakfast right in your kitchen.

For one serving, you will need:

-chopped onions
-fresh pepper, finely chopped, or pepper to taste

-grated carrot (optional)
-milk or water (optional)
-salt, to taste
-seasoning powder, if desired
-vegetable oil
You can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste or the number of people you are preparing breakfast for.
Step-by-step guide to making an omelette
Step 1: Prepare your ingredients
Start by washing your vegetables thoroughly. Chop the onions, fresh pepper and green pepper into small pieces. If you are using carrots, grate them or chop them finely.
Preparing your ingredients before you begin cooking makes the process easier and helps you work more efficiently.
Step 2: Crack and whisk the eggs
Break the eggs into a clean bowl, making sure no shell falls into the mixture. Add salt and seasoning powder, if using.
Using a fork or whisk, beat the eggs until the yolks and whites are fully combined. You can add a tablespoon of water or milk if you prefer a softer texture, although this is entirely optional.
Whisking the eggs properly helps create an even mixture and gives your omelette a more uniform texture.
Step 3: Add the vegetables
Add the chopped onions, pepper, green pepper and grated carrot to the beaten eggs. Stir everything together until the vegetables are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
You can also add other ingredients you enjoy, such as chopped spinach, tomatoes or spring onions. However, use vegetables sparingly so that the omelette holds together well.
Step 4: Heat the frying pan
Place a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat and add the vegetable oil. Allow the oil to heat gently, spreading it across the surface of the pan.
Avoid overheating the pan. If it becomes too hot, the eggs may cook too quickly on the outside while remaining undercooked in the middle.
Step 5: Pour in the egg mixture
Once the pan is warm, pour the egg and vegetable mixture into it. Gently tilt the pan from side to side to spread the mixture evenly.
Allow the eggs to cook undisturbed for a short while. As the edges begin to set, you can gently push them towards the centre with a spatula, allowing the uncooked egg to flow into the empty spaces.
Step 6: Cook until the omelette sets
Continue cooking over low to medium-low heat until the bottom is set and the top is almost firm. This usually takes a few minutes, depending on the thickness of the omelette and the heat level.
If the omelette is thick, cover the pan briefly to help the top cook evenly. You can carefully flip it with a spatula if you prefer both sides lightly browned.
Ensure the eggs are fully cooked before removing the pan from the heat.
Step 7: Fold and serve
Once the omelette is cooked, gently fold it in half using a spatula and transfer it to a plate.
Your homemade omelette is ready to serve!
For a more satisfying breakfast, enjoy it with boiled yam, sweet potatoes, pancakes, sautéed vegetables or a side of fresh fruit. You can also serve it with a slice of toast or eat it on its own if you prefer a lighter meal.
