Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, during the harvest flag-off of an 80-hectare cassava farmland, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening food production systems across the state
Speaking through the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Bolu Owotomo, at Ifonyintedo, Ipokia Local Government Area,
According to Simbo Olayinka, Project Communications Officer, the initiative forms part of the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and improving livelihoods.
Governor Abiodun explained that the farmland cultivated by 80 farmers received comprehensive government support, including a 65% subsidy on land clearing and a 50% discount on cassava stems, herbicides, pesticides, and fertilisers.
He noted that each farmer is expected to earn a minimum of N2.4 million from the harvest.
To combat one of the key challenges confronting Nigerian farmers market access, the governor revealed that all 80 participants have been linked to off-takers to ensure immediate sales and eliminate post-harvest losses.
“To ensure sustainability, we provided market access by connecting them to off-takers who will purchase the produce immediately. With this, the market is guaranteed,” he said.
Abiodun reiterated that transforming the agricultural sector remains a central priority of his administration and encouraged more farmers to participate in upcoming programmes.
He stressed the importance of collaboration in attaining food security across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Abiodun Yusuph expressed gratitude to the government, describing the intervention as a major relief for the farming community.
He praised the 65% subsidy on preparatory activities and 50% support on input costs, which, he said, significantly eased the burden on farmers.
Also present at the event, Dr. Ope Adejuwon, representative of the Agricultural Sector Project Manager, noted that the programme is strictly targeted at genuine, active farmers.
“This initiative is tailored for genuine farmers. Only those who are actively engaged in farming are empowered under this scheme,” he stated.
