Taraba to Get Specialized Academy on Livestock Development

by AgroNigeria

The Minister of Livestock  Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha has disclosed plans for a major livestock training initiative in Taraba State, following a proposal by an international dairy firm to establish a specialized academy aimed at transforming the sector.

The minister made this known during a visit to the state capital, where he led a delegation of investors and technical partners to meet with Governor Agbu Kefas at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo. Central to the discussions was a partnership framework to set up a centre dedicated to advancing livestock production through structured education and hands-on training.

According to Maiha, the absence of formal institutions focused on livestock development has slowed progress in the industry, as many farmers still depend on outdated practices.

He stressed that modern dairy and livestock farming now require scientific knowledge, technical skills, and organized training systems to improve output and attract serious investment.

He explained that the proposed academy would combine theoretical instruction with practical exposure through an integrated farm facility.

Key areas of focus would include animal health management, breeding techniques, feed production, milking processes, and proper hygiene standards.

The minister noted that Taraba was selected for the project due to its strong agricultural potential, especially the Mambilla Plateau, which is known for its conducive climate, vast grazing land, and large cattle population.

An international dairy specialist, Gavel Don, described the initiative as a strategic step toward boosting economic returns from dairy production.

He added that a technical team would soon carry out site assessments as part of the next phase of engagement.

Governor Kefas, in his response, reiterated his administration’s commitment to opening up the state to investors.

He said Taraba possesses the natural resources needed to meet local and national demand for livestock products if properly developed.

The governor also linked the growing attention to the livestock sector to reforms introduced by Bola Tinubu, particularly the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, which he said reflects a renewed national focus on the industry.

While assuring investors of a safe and stable environment, Kefas acknowledged that security challenges exist in some areas but maintained that they are being effectively managed by security agencies.

He called on residents to continue supporting efforts to sustain peace across the state.

He expressed confidence that the proposed academy and similar partnerships would unlock new economic opportunities, enhance skills development, and position Taraba as a leading centre for livestock production in Nigeria.
