Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has launched a statewide tree planting campaign across all 13 Local Government Areas, aiming to combat the adverse effects of climate change.
During the flag-off event held in Karu LGA, on Wednesday, the governor emphasized that the initiative is part of efforts to create a greener environment and improve the quality of life for residents.
He highlighted that the campaign aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.
Governor Sule stated that the project would not only enhance the state’s aesthetics but also help reduce erosion and support a healthier ecosystem.
He added that the government had provided waste bins to all LGAs to encourage proper waste disposal.
He further noted that with a climate-smart waste management approach, refuse could be transformed for agricultural use and energy production, contributing to the state’s economic development.
Addressing the persistent traffic issues in Karu, Sule revealed that the state had sought federal support to fund alternative road projects in Mararraba, Gitata, and Gurku.
He also disclosed that plans are in progress for the construction of a flyover or underpass to ease congestion in the area.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Margaret Elayo, urged residents to actively support the government’s efforts in protecting and maintaining a clean environment to prevent the outbreak of diseases and natural disasters.
She pointed out that many environmental problems faced by communities stem from poor waste management practices, which contribute to climate change and desertification.
Elayo, therefore, encouraged citizens to make proper use of the waste bins placed at key locations across the state, emphasizing that the Nasarawa State Waste Management Agency would handle regular collection and disposal.
In separate contributions, the Esu Karu, Luka Panya-Baba, and the Chairman of Karu Local Government Area, Abubakar Madaki, raised concerns about road blockages in Old Karu and Rugan Madaki.
They noted that the obstructions were worsening traffic congestion and creating significant hardship for motorists.
Both leaders appealed to the state government to address the issue promptly and find a lasting solution to ease the burden on road users and residents in the affected areas.
It was earlier reported that Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the Federal Government’s plan to plant 20 billion trees during the next rainy season.
This initiative is part of a broader national strategy focused on reforestation and environmental sustainability.
The Vice President made the disclosure following an inspection tour of various agricultural and industrial projects in Ethiopia.
He also visited several agricultural and industrial facilities, including Adama Dairy Farms, Luke Avocado Nursery, Shera Dibandiba Mojo Family Integrated Farm, Biyyo Poultry Farm, and Bishoftu Pea Farm, as part of initiatives aimed at enhancing agricultural cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations in industrial development.
