NRCRI Unveils New Yam, Potato Varieties to Boost Food Security

by AgroNigeria

The National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, has introduced two early-maturing white yam varieties and an improved potato variety, marking a significant advancement in Nigeria’s drive toward food security and agricultural productivity.

The newly released yam varieties UMUDr37 (Primeoval) and UMUDr38 (Mazamaza) are designed to deliver higher yields, improved adaptability, and better processing potential for both local consumption and export markets.

According to the institute, UMUDr37 (Primeoval) offers an impressive yield of 45.8 tonnes per hectare, combined with a high dry matter content of 35.4 per cent, making it particularly suitable for processing and international trade.

The second variety, UMUDr38 (Mazamaza), yields 32.6 tonnes per hectare and is noted for its adaptability across different environments, as well as its tolerance to diseases — a critical factor for farmers managing crop risks.

In addition, NRCRI also released an improved potato variety known as “Connect,” which is high-yielding, disease-resistant, and tailored to meet consumer preferences.

The development is expected to enhance farmer productivity, increase incomes, and strengthen value chains within Nigeria’s root and tuber sector. It also aligns with broader national efforts to improve food availability and reduce reliance on imports.

Stakeholders have described the release as a timely innovation that will support farmers with resilient crop options while expanding market opportunities across the agricultural value chain.

The breakthrough has been credited to the efforts of Dr. Charles Amadi and his research team, whose work continues to contribute to agricultural innovation and sustainability in Nigeria.
